Notable results from Monday's Sports Equinox

NBA, NFL, MLB, WWE, NHL, NCAA Women's Volleyball, Washington Commanders, Dallas Mavericks, Kansas City Chiefs, Pittsburgh Penguins, Minnesota Timberwolves, Toronto Blue Jays, Oklahoma City Thunder, St. Louis Blues, Los Angeles Dodgers, Denver Nuggets

Some days on the sports calendar merit circling. They come once a year: Super Bowl Sunday; the opening Thursday of March Madness. Take your pick. But did you know Monday was such a day on the sports calendar?

That's right. Oct. 27, 2025, marked a "sports equinox."

The premise is simple. Because of the different schedules across professional sports (the NFL plays only in the fall and winter, the NBA season doesn't start until mid-fall, etc.), there's an extremely small window in the year when all four of the major men's American professional sports leagues are all playing on one night. This year, Monday was that window.

Interested in what the four major men's American professional sports leagues were up to on the 2025 sports equinox? We've got you covered.

MLB

Notable results: Game 3 of the World Series between the Los Angeles Dodgers and Toronto Blue Jays did not disappoint. The two teams traded haymakers on the way to an 18-inning classic.

The Dodgers jumped out to a 2-0 lead after home runs from Teoscar Hernandez in the second inning and Shohei Ohtani in the third. The Blue Jays answered with four runs in the fourth to take the lead. Los Angeles tied the game in the fifth inning before Toronto retook the lead in the top of the seventh. Ohtani -- who reached base a record nine times -- tied it up again in the bottom of the seventh with his second homer of the night.

The game eclipsed six hours and reached the 18th inning, tying for the longest game in World Series history. It eventually concluded with a Freddie Freeman walk-off homer, which gave the Dodgers a 6-5 victory.

NBA

Notable results: Whenever San Antonio Spurs star Victor Wembanyama takes the floor, it's must-watch basketball. That was the case on Monday, too. Wembanyama registered 24 points and 15 rebounds -- including a memorable 360 layup -- in the Spurs' 121-103 victory over the Toronto Raptors.

Three other teams -- the Oklahoma City Thunder, Philadelphia 76ers and Chicago Bulls -- remained undefeated on the season after winning Monday night. The Thunder held on to beat the Dallas Mavericks on the road, the 76ers beat the Orlando Magic at home and the Bulls defeated the visiting Atlanta Hawks.

The 76ers were notably led again by guards Tyrese Maxey (43 points) and rookie VJ Edgecombe (26 points). Maxey and Edgecombe have combined for 186 points this season, the most by any starting backcourt through the first three games of the season since starters were first tracked in 1970-71.

The Utah Jazz beat the Phoenix Suns 138-134 in overtime, with Utah forward Lauri Markkanen dropping a career-high 51 points, along with 14 rebounds, becoming the first player in Jazz history with at least 50 points, 10 rebounds and five 3-pointers made in a game.

NFL

Notable result: The Kansas City Chiefs defeated the Washington Commanders 28-7 on "Monday Night Football." Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes threw for 299 yards and three touchdowns, while Travis Kelce had six receptions for a season-high 99 yards plus a score. Kelce scored his 83rd career touchdown, which tied him with Priest Holmes for the most in Chiefs franchise history. Starting in place of quarterback Jayden Daniels, who was out with a hamstring injury, Marcus Mariota had 213 passing yards, one touchdown and two interceptions.

NHL

Notable results: There were only two games on the slate, but there was still plenty to talk about, as the Ottawa Senators handled the Boston Bruins 7-2, while the Pittsburgh Penguins took down the St. Louis Blues 6-3. Penguins star Sidney Crosby had one goal and two assists to break the career 1,700-point barrier. He is the ninth player in NHL history to score 1,700 points, and the fourth to reach the mark with one team.

Elsewhere in the sports world ...

Notable results: In LaLiga, Atlético Madrid and Real Betis met in what could possible be an early tempo-setter in the race for a Champions League place. Giuliano Simeone netted a goal in the third minute for Atlético, jump-starting a 2-0 victory.

A pair of MLS Cup playoff games kicked off Monday night, too. A Hell Is Real derby between FC Cincinnati and the Columbus Crew ended in a 1-0 Cincinnati victory. In the Western Conference, Minnesota United FC beat the Seattle Sounders FC in a 0-0 game that went to penalty kicks.
