LAKE FOREST, Ill. -- Chicago Bears defensive end Willie Young suffered a torn left Achilles tendon Sunday against the Detroit Lions, coach Marc Trestman confirmed on Monday.
"That's a tough one. He's really been an inspirational leader," Trestman said. "You guys know him in the locker room; he's a charismatic guy, he keeps people upbeat. He's fun to be around, and has played well and gotten better throughout the season. He'll be missed on Sunday, certainly."
Young is scheduled to undergo surgery, although Trestman declined to estimate the length of Young's expected recovery time.
According to ESPN injury analyst Stephania Bell, the rehabilitation time for a torn Achilles tendon is typically six months; however, the timetable can fluctuate depending on the location of the tear, health of the tendon and surgery specifics.
Young suffered the injury while rushing Lions quarterback Matthew Stafford. After the play, Young stayed down for several minutes and athletic trainers helped the defensive end off the field, before calling for a cart to take him to the locker room for further examination.
He left Soldier Field on Sunday afternoon in a walking boot.
Young, a fifth-year veteran and former Lion, finishes the season with a career-high 10 sacks.
