Sources: Ball State Cardinals fire men's basketball coach James Whitford after 9 seasons

Men's College Basketball, Ball State Cardinals

Ball StateĀ fired men's basketball head coach James Whitford on Monday morning after nine seasons at the helm, sources told ESPN.

The Cardinals went 9-10 in Mid-American Conference play this season, but were knocked out of the conference tournament last week by Ohio. They finished 14-17 overall, their second straight season under .500.

Whitford failed to reach the NCAA tournament in any of his nine seasons at Ball State, going to two CITs in 2016 and 2017. He won three MAC West Division titles and exceeded 20 wins on two occasions.

Overall, he was 131-148 during his time with the Cardinals.

Prior to taking over at Ball State in 2013, Whitford was an assistant coach at Arizona and Xavier. He spent four seasons at each school after spending eight seasons at Miami (Ohio).

Ball State hasn't been to the NCAA tournament since 2000, when Ray McCallum led them to the MAC tournament title.
