Liverpool just hung on for a second straight Premier League win, and a third win in a row in all competitions, as they beat Tottenham Hotspur 2-1 in North London on Saturday evening. Spurs finished the game with nine men, following red cards to Cristian Romero and Xavi Simons.
In an uneventful first half, Simons raked down the back of Virgil van Dijk's shin with his studs showing, and that was enough for VAR to ruile that it was a red card offence. Liverpool, even with the man advantage, barely created a chance in the first half. But Alexander Isak scored ten minutes after coming on as a half-time substitute, after being really nicely set up by Florian Wirtz.
Isak ran in behind and got on the end of a Wirtz through-ball before slotting past Guglielmo Vicario. However, it looked like Isak picked up a serious injury, following contact from micky van de Ven, as he slid in to try and block Isak's shot that he scored off.
Liverpool doubled their lead soon after, as Hugo Ekitike headed Jeremie Frimpong's deflected cross into the far corner. Liverpool were cruising, but Richarlison came on to score and halve the deficit, following dreadful Liverpool defending of a corner, that they never really managed to clear despite having five or six attempts to do so.
Romero was sent off in second-half stoppage time, following a second yellow card for kicking out at Ibrahima Konate. Pedro Porro had two shots in stoppage time, but both were straight at Alisson, as Liverpool just managed to cling on to the three points, which moved them up to fifth in the Premier League standings.
