Giménez heads Atlético Madrid to late win over Inter Milan

José María Giménez scored a header deep into stoppage time as Atlético Madrid snatched a 2-1 home victory over Inter Milan in the Champions League.

Piotr Zielinski's equaliser cancelled out Julian Alvarez's first-half strike and it looked like both sides would take a share of the spoils, enabling Inter to keep their unbeaten record intact.

However, defender Giménez jumped highest from a corner for his first goal of the campaign to give Atlético a third win of the competition and lift them into 12th in the table, inflicting a first defeat of the campaign on Inter following four straight wins.

Both teams started brightly but Inter had the game's first big chance inside three minutes as Federico Dimarco picked up the ball in space and sent an effort whistling inches wide of the post.

Atlético hit the front six minutes later despite the referee initially ruling the effort out for a handball.

Hakan Çalhanoglu was dispossessed inside his own half and Giuliano Simeone sent a troubling ball toward the back post, Carlos Augusto's clearance bounced off Álex Baena and into the path of Alvarez who tucked home.

Referee Francois Letexier initially ruled the goal out after he thought the ball struck the hand of Baena but VAR intervened to show it did not, sparking Atlético celebrations.

The chances kept coming for both sides though, Calhanoglu picked up a pass and tried his luck from distance but Juan Musso was equal to the shot.

At the other end Alvarez's long-range effort brought a good save out of Inter goalkeeper Yann Sommer.

Inter came out the traps at the start of the second period in search of an equaliser and almost got one straight away, with Nicolò Barella striking the crossbar.

The visitors made the pressure pay nine minutes into the half. Zielinski latched onto a ball from Ange-Yoan Bonny and slipped a neat finish into the bottom right corner to level the scores.

However, Atlético snatched victory deep into stoppage-time. Antoine Griezmann's corner found Giménez, who jumped highest and nodded into the bottom corner.
