Barcelona breeze past Real Madrid 4-0 in women's Clásico

Ewa Pajor scored a brace in the first half against Real Madrid.

Barcelona breezed past Real Madrid 4-0 at the Estadi Olímpic Lluís Companys on Saturday as Ewa Pajor scored a first-half brace in her first start since returning from a knee injury.

Late goals from Sydney Schertenleib and Aitana Bonmatí doubled the scoreline as Barça dominated their Liga F rivals.

The scoreline didn't do justice to Madrid's performance, with Caroline Wier and Linda Caicedo both having first-half goals disallowed for offside.

Weir was offered a late consolation chance after being given a penalty but her low-driven effort was stopped by Cata Coll.

The Barça goal keeper was subject to high praise after the match following her clean-sheet performance.

"I am really happy for Cata," manager Pere Romeu said after the match. "If we're honest, there are games when teams don't create a lot for her to do and we need a goalkeeper connected for the entire 90 minutes. Cata has given us a lot in key moments. She's an incredible worker.

"The key was starting the game well, Cata saving us in two key moments, and then finishing the game strongly. In between, there were moments when we had to suffer. We were mentally strong. I would have liked to have a little more control of the ball, but Madrid played really well today. There were moments when it was really even."

Pajor, who made her first start since returning from a knee injury also shone.

"Pajor's (injury) was a big scare, but it wasn't as bad as people feared," Romeu added. "We wanted to have some patience bringing her back into the group. I think she's good now. She's a key player for us. It doesn't surprise me how she responded today because I see how she works every day."

At the other end of the pitch, Madrid goalkeeper and captain Misa Rodriguez praised her sides efforts to stay in the game despite missed opportunities.

"At the end of the day, we were in the game," she said. "We had chances which we didn't take. That's the difference between one team and the other today. The small details make the difference in the Clásico. Now we turn our attention to the Champions League with another really tough opponent coming up."

Real Madrid face reigning champions Arsenal on Wednesday, while Barça face English champions Chelsea on Thursday.
