May 28: What you need to know for Wednesday

Todd Zola: Today's 15-game slate features nine matinees, five kicking off the action simultaneously at 1:10 p.m. ET. As has seemingly been the case all month, a couple of games are in jeopardy -- especially in Philadelphia, and to a lesser extent, Baltimore. The Philadelphia Phillies and Atlanta Braves also meet tomorrow, so a postponement between the NL East rivals would force a doubleheader either Thursday or perhaps later in the season. However, the Baltimore Orioles and St. Louis Cardinals are currently scheduled to be off on Thursday. Still, a postponement could result in a matinee tomorrow, allowing the Cardinals to head to Arlington afterwards at a reasonable time.

  • Texas Rangers SP Nathan Eovaldi was lifted from last night's affair after just two frames due to triceps fatigue. The move was deemed precautionary with the club expecting the righty to make his next start. A pair of upcoming days off should give him a minimum of six days to rest, helping Eovaldi to fully recover.

  • Even better news out of Arlington is tonight's return of SS Corey Seager for the Rangers' home date with the Toronto Blue Jays. Seager missed 16 games after re-injuring his right hamstring. He had previously missed 10 contests thanks to the same issue.

  • Phillies 1B Bryce Harper left last night's matchup with the Braves after Spencer Strider hit him in the elbow with a pitch. X-rays came back negative, rendering Harper's status as day-to-day.

  • Cardinals 2B/OF Brendan Donovan was scratched from last night's lineup due to a tight hip, although the club anticipates that Donovan can play today. The versatile lefty swinger has played mostly second base, with some time in the outfield and a handful of appearances at shortstop. He's quietly on pace for a career year with a .328/.390/.463 line.

  • The Detroit Tigers will again be without 3B/OF Matt Vierling after he was placed on the 10-day IL due to right shoulder inflammation. His 2025 debut had been delayed until last week as a result of a strained tight rotator cuff, so the club is likely to make sure he is fully healed before again returning to action. Vierling traded places with OF Wenceel Perez, who was activated after himself having been sidelined since the spring due to back inflammation. Perez went yard in his first game back and could garner a lot of action with both Parker Meadows and Vierling out. Perez could take over in center field, pushing Javier Baez to third base.

May 27: What you need to know for Tuesday

Todd Zola: Tuesday's full slate gets underway with an interleague tilt featuring the Los Angeles Dodgers visiting the Cleveland Guardians at 6:10 p.m. ET. The only contest under weather watch is the St. Louis Cardinals at the Baltimore Orioles, with first pitch scheduled for 6:35 p.m. ET. It likely will be raining, so the question is whether it is tolerable for play.

  • Rain isn't a concern at Wrigley Field on Tuesday, but the forecast calls for cool temperatures in the low 50s with wind blowing in for the matchup between Chicago Cubs RHP Cade Horton and RHP German Marquez of the Colorado Rockies. On paper, runs should be scant.

  • Los Angeles Angels C Logan O'Hoppe was hit in the helmet by a backswing Monday night and was removed for precautionary reasons. He's slated for tests Tuesday, and his status is unclear. Backup C Travis d'Arnaud would be in line to replace him behind the plate.

  • Miami Marlins OF Derek Hill returned to the IL Monday with a left wrist sprain. It's unclear whether this injury is new or if he aggravated a previous issue that cost him 22 games earlier in the season. Since his initial return, Hill had posted a .323/.382/.484 line with three steals in 12 games, but a 35.5% strikeout rate in that span suggests a slump was on the way. Victor Mesa was called up from Triple-A Jacksonville and made his MLB debut Monday night, but with OF Dane Myers starting a rehab assignment for an oblique injury, Mesa's first foray in the show could be short.

  • Guardians 1B Carlos Santana missed the last two games with left leg tightness. His absence allowed Kyle Manzardo to play first base for the 17th time this season. Manzardo has already picked up 1B eligibility for the rest of this year and now is just three appearances from entering next season eligible at the spot.

  • Baltimore Orioles C Adley Rutschman was held out of Monday's matinee after being hit in the mask with a foul tip on Sunday. The club's starting backstop has not been officially placed in concussion protocol, so he's questionable for Tuesday's game.
