Women's Bracketology: 2025 NCAA tournament
The 2024-25 season is underway, and with it comes a few changes to the selection process. The demise of the Pac-12 means automatic bids now total 31, which increases the at-large selections to 37. The 2025 NCAA tournament will look the same, with two regionals -- Birmingham and Spokane -- and the top four seeds in each region hosting first- and second-round games. The committee will give us a glimpse at those top 16 teams with in-season reveals on Feb. 16 and 26. Selection Sunday is March 16.
Bracket Watch
Upsets were hard to come by this week. The top eight teams and the top two seed lines of Bracketology stayed the same from Week 1. But there were some movers. Maryland was one of the biggest, rising from a 5-seed to the best No. 4 seed (No. 13 overall) after upsetting Duke on Sunday. The Terps, with 10 newcomers and only three returners that had any impact a year ago, seem to have come together more quickly than expected. Kaylene Smikle was the first of six players from other major conference programs to transfer to College Park; she has been Maryland's best transfer -- and perhaps the best in the country. The former Rutgers wing is averaging 16.7 points per game, including 23 against Duke. With a relatively light nonconference slate the rest of the way, Maryland might be unbeaten by the time it opens Big Ten play against Michigan State on Dec. 29.
