Each week, I'll write about the sport I love: college basketball. • New Charlotte coach Mark Price will have his son joining him. Former TCU guard Hudson Price will officially join the 49ers program and will have two years of eligibility remaining. He will sit out the 2015-16 season and be eligible to suit up for Charlotte beginning in the 2016-17 campaign. The 6-foot-6 guard saw action in 53 games with eight starts over the past two seasons at TCU. • Michigan hopes to have guard Zak Irvin back in the lineup for the start of the regular season. He recently underwent a procedure on his back. Irvin averaged more than 14 points per game for the Wolverines last season. • Congratulations to former Georgetown coach John Thompson, who will receive the first Dean Smith Award. The United States Basketball Writers of America will present the award in November. Thompson served as an assistant to Smith at the 1976 Olympics. • Also worthy of congratulations is the newly enshrined class of the Basketball Hall of Fame. Among the 11 new members to the Hall included Kentucky coach John Calipari, former Georgetown star Dikembe Mutombo, former coach George Raveling (Washington State, Iowa and USC) and ex-USC star Lisa Leslie. • So sorry to learn of the death of former Iowa star Roy Marble at a way-too-early 48. Marble died of cancer, and we must defeat this dreaded disease. May he rest in peace. • I was also saddened to hear of Moses Malone's death at age 60. • The Memphis administration's decision to backtrack and postpone plans to honor John Calipari is really small. Shame on those in Memphis who forgot about all the great times Calipari gave them. • Memo to Kansas State students. Hoops for Hope, a 4-on-4 charity basketball tournament is Saturday, Oct. 3 at the rec!
