NFL's Week 5 slate got underway with a matchup of NFC West rivals when the injury-riddled underdog San Francisco 49ers beat the Los Angeles Rams in L.A. in overtime on "Thursday Night Football." The line had opened at Rams -3.5 before injuries (including to Brock Purdy) moved it all the way to Rams -8.5. Per ESPN Research, this was Kyle Shanahan's sixth straight wins over Sean McVay as a betting underdog, tying the longest such win streak by one head coach against another in the Super Bowl Era (since 1966). Mike Tomlin beat John Harbaugh in 6 straight games as an underdog from 2020-24, There will be an early Sunday football again this week as Dillon Gabriel makes his NFL debut in London, England for the Cleveland Browns as they face the Minnesota Vikings, playing the second leg of their two-game European road trip. Lines have moved for Denver Broncos at Philadelphia Eagles, as well as for Houston Texans at Baltimore Ravens, though the latter can be attributed to expectations that Cooper Rush will be starting for the Ravens due to Lamar Jackson's injury. Sunday night features another division rivalry when the Buffalo Bills host the New England Patriots. The week wraps up with the Kansas City Chiefs hitting the road to take on the Jacksonville Jaguars on "Monday Night Football" (8:15 p.m. ET on ABC/ESPN).
