Bangladesh 109 for 0 (Shadman 58*, Mahmudul 50*) trail Ireland 286 (Stirling 60, Carmichael 59, Mehidy 3-50) by 177 runs
Bangladesh openers Shadman Islam and Mahmudul Hasan Joy struck unbeaten fifties, stitching a century stand on the second morning of the first Test against Ireland in Sylhet. The home side went to lunch on 109 for 0, after Ireland were bowled out for 286 on the second morning.
Ireland's 286 was slightly higher than the average first-innings score in Sylhet, though they had at least four batters poised for big scores.
Mahmudul struck all his fours on the off-side, mostly with cover drives, while his only six came over midwicket. Shadman drove the well on both sides of the wicket, hammering eight fours, while his only six came from a powerful drive over long-off.
Ireland's first innings lasted only 13 minutes in the morning after Taijul Islam and Hasan Mahmud took the last two wickets. Taijul got a sweeping Matthew Humphreys lbw for a duck, before Hasan Mahmud cleaned up Bary McCarthy for 31.
Paul Stirling and Cade Carmichael struck fifties on the opening day, while Curtis Campher and Lorcan Tucker got out in the 40s. None of the Ireland batters could cash in on the Sylhet pitch.
Stirling and Carmichael added 96 runs for the second wicket, but then came Ireland's steady decline. Newcomer Jordan Neill impressed in his brief stay before falling on the last ball of the first day.
Bangladesh's bowling was steady, with Mehidy Hasan Miraz taking three wickets while Taijul and Mahmud picked up two each. Their catching, however, left a lot to be desired, with five chances going down.
