3pm: Wow. A tricky start somehow snowballed into an all-timer for India. Their score of 78 is the seventh-lowest in Test history after choosing to bat first, although the last pair did manage to scrape them past a couple of feebler efforts by India, versus West Indies in 1987 and South Africa in 2008. The conditions at Headingley don't look to treacherous, on the surface - but clearly it did enough for England's seamers throughout, with Rohit Sharma's struggle for 19 off 105 indicative of the challenge. Fortunately for Virat Kohli, he has a decent seam attack at his command, too. Even more fortunately, he's playing against England, who have resembled 10 cardboard cut-outs plus Joe Root in recent times. If the ball keeps nipping around, this could continue to be a lively afternoon

Overton to Mohammed Siraj, OUT, steered to first slip from outside leg! Slip-catching practice in the end, although it was a difficult one above Root's head. Siraj's method of clearing the decks and then having a swish ends up giving Overton a third, and his best figures for a Test innings

Hello, folks. In the words of a Headingley favourite, it's all going off out there!

Curran to I Sharma, 3 runs, full, swinging in towards off stump, and Ishant puts that away nicely, opens his bat face and pushes to the right of point

Overton to I Sharma, 1 run, dropped. A very difficult chance. Ishant backs away to a length ball on the stumps, and has a massive slog at it. Thick edge, and Bairstow, leaping upwards and to his left from second slip, with both arms at full stretch, can only get his fingertips to it

Overton to I Sharma, no run, inswinger, and Ishant shuffles a long way across once more and gets beaten on the inside edge while trying to defend. Lbw appeal, not given. Impact may have been outside off stump, you'd think

Overton to I Sharma, no run, back of a length on off stump, stands tall and punches firmly, with a lot more apparent power than the eventual result, which is the ball dribbling slowly to mid-on

Curran to Mohammed Siraj, no run, ouch. short ball, and Siraj, looking to back away and hoick it away, takes a blow to the body, somewhere in the midriff region

England, of course, were all out for 67 at this ground, and they went on to win, as they've been reminding you every day for the last two years...

Curran to Mohammed Siraj, no run, full swinging in, and Siraj flicks and misses, but this ball's sliding down leg. Not much interest in the lbw appeal initially, but England have taken a last-second review... Ah, he's inside-edged it into his pad, so no hat-trick for Curran

India have lost four wickets in the space of six balls here. And No. 11 will soon be out to try and prevent a hat-trick. Here's Mohammed Siraj now.

W
Curran to Bumrah, OUT, and Curran has two in two! Bumrah follows Shami in upholding the law of averages, unlesss... He's reviewed, but I don't see how he could be not out here. Length ball, pitching in line and straightening in, and Bumrah's front pad gets in the way as he tries to bring his bat down and defend... Crashing into leg stump, and Bumrah is out first ball too!

JJ Bumrah lbw b Curran 0 (2m 1b 0x4 0x6) SR: 0.00

Shubham Jalan: "Told ya, at the start, that it's gonna be a 36 all out day" -- They've almost scored twice that many, mate!

W
Curran to Jadeja, OUT, that has to be lbw, hasn't it? Yup, up goes the finger. Jadeja has reviewed, but more because he can and he's the last recognised batter than from any belief that he could be not out. Or is there an inside edge? Nearly a yorker, pitching somewhere around off stump and straightening, and Jadeja closes his bat face to try and flick it away. Misses - yup, no inside edge - and he's struck on the front leg, low down near the boot... It's crashing into off stump according to Hawkeye, and that is that for Jadeja. Curran is now among the wickets too.

RA Jadeja lbw b Curran 4 (42m 29b 0x4 0x6) SR: 13.79

Davinder : "Reason why god is preventing Kohli from winning toss."

Overton to I Sharma, no run, fullish, straightening towards off stump, and Ishant shuffles across and curtain-rails his bat into position to squeeze it towards gully

Ishant Sharma faces the hat-trick ball.

If you had no idea what the law of averages is, that Shami dismissal was the very definition.

Hemachandra: "This is wrong statement --> the first wicket today to not involve Buttler or a guy with a son in his name. -- it was caught by Robinson :-D " -- Ha, I didn't realise that!

Overton to Mohammed Shami, OUT, and he's gone first ball! Length ball in the corridor, straightens off the seam, and Shami fends at it, squares up, and pops it straight into the midriff of Burns at third slip

Mohammed Shami c Burns b Overton 0 (2m 1b 0x4 0x6) SR: 0.00

Here's Mohammed Shami.

And just like that, the first wicket today to not involve Buttler or a guy with a son in his name.
