Toss West Indies chose to bowl vs New Zealand
West Indies captain Roston Chase won the toss and opted to bowl against New Zealand in the first Test at the Hagley Oval. Apart from the overcast conditions and a green pitch, Chase said that's what teams do here: of the 14 Tests played here before this one, the team winning the toss opted to bat only once.
Kemar Roach returned for West Indies, who also handed a debut to Ojay Shields. Seam-bowling allrounder Johann Layne also found a place in the XI.
For New Zealand, Daryl Mitchell was yet to recover from his injury, so Will Young slotted in at No. 5.
West Indies are up against history - it has been 30 years since they won a Test in New Zealand. The last time they beat New Zealand was in 2014 in Port-of-Spain. Since then, they have lost each of their last five Tests against them.
