South Carolina quarterback LaNorris Sellers goes down after a big hit from Vanderbilt's Langston Patterson, which results in an ejection for Patterson. (0:48)

South Carolina quarterback LaNorris Sellers was knocked out of Saturday night's 31-7 loss at home to Vanderbilt after suffering a hit to the head late in the first half.

Sellers went down after taking a high hit from Vanderbilt linebacker Langston Patterson on a pass in the final two minutes of the second quarter and went to the locker room. Patterson was ejected from the game for targeting on the play.

The 11th-ranked Gamecocks were trailing 14-7 at home when Sellers went down.

"Injury-wise, don't have an update for you on LaNorris," South Carolina coach Shane Beamer said after the game.

Sellers is ESPN's No. 1-ranked quarterback prospect for the 2026 NFL draft and has produced 476 total yards and three touchdowns through three games.

Sellers completed 6 of 7 passes for 94 yards with 1 interception before the injury. Backup Luke Doty, a sixth-year senior who has nine career starts, replaced Sellers to finish the first half.

Doty, who threw for 148 yards on 18-of-27 passing, had an interception and a fumble in the fourth quarter. The Gamecocks turned it over four times on the night and were held scoreless on six offensive possessions in the second half in the program's first loss to Vanderbilt since 2008.

"They came in here and obviously played really, really well," Beamer said. "We did not. It starts with me. Not good enough. You lose the turnover battle like we did tonight, when you turn the ball over four times in this league, you're going to get your butts kicked, and that's what happened tonight."

The Commodores had lost 31 consecutive road games against AP top 25 opponents dating to 2007 and are 3-0 for the first time since 2017.

At halftime, Beamer expressed his displeasure with how long officials took to review the play for targeting. Officials took more than 90 seconds after the end of the play to initiate a targeting review and blew their whistles right before Doty completed a pass to Nyck Harbor.

"I asked him as soon as it happened if [they were] looking at it for targeting," Beamer said during his halftime interview. "For our quarterback to be laying there on the ground like that, he probably got hit in the head. And then, for whatever reason, it took them a while to buzz down.

"So, I don't know what's going on in Birmingham or wherever they look at it, but I thought it was pretty obvious."

After the game, Beamer said it's too soon to say whether Doty would start if Sellers misses more time.

"No clue," Beamer said. "We'll look at everything. Luke was in there tonight. We all got to be better. We'll evaluate everything as we go into Missouri week."

Beamer said he also did not have an update on the status of starting right tackle Cason Henry, who exited because of an injury in the second quarter. The Gamecocks go on the road to face No. 25 Missouri next Saturday (7 p.m. ET, ESPN).
