No Jets in Pro Bowl, but Leonard Williams almost crashes the party

FLORHAM PARK, N.J. -- The Pro Bowl selections were announced Tuesday night and -- hardly a surprise -- the New York Jets were shut out.

This is what happens to 4-10 teams.

The Jets' only worthy candidate was Leonard Williams, but he might have been undermined by a technicality. Even though he plays mostly as an interior lineman, he was listed on the Pro Bowl ballot as a defensive end -- a position often evaluated on sack totals.

Williams leads the Jets with seven sacks, impressive for a defensive tackle, but not so much for an end. He was no lock as a tackle -- Ndamukong Suh, Geno Atkins and Jurrell Casey will represent the AFC -- but his chances would've been better as an interior candidate.

He wound up as a first alternate, which means he could wind up playing in the game.

Williams was hoping to make his first Pro Bowl in his second season, but he shouldn't get down on himself. Still only 22 years old, Williams is an ascending talent and will have many Pro Bowls in his future.

No one else on the Jets' roster garnered strong consideration, a sad commentary on the state of the roster. There's a dearth of talent because the last draft to produce a Pro Bowl selection was 2011 -- Muhammad Wilkerson. Sheldon Richardson played in the Pro Bowl in 2014, but he made it as an alternate. This time, he's the fifth alternate.
