With free agency and the draft completed and OTAs and minicamps scheduled for the next month and a half, here’s a closer look at the depth chart for the New York Giants:
OFFENSE
Note: Starters in bold
Quarterback (3): Eli Manning, Davis Webb, Kyle Lauletta
The Giants have quadrupled down on the 37-year-old Manning this offseason, saying he has “years” left. They have last year’s third-round pick and this year’s fourth-rounder as insurance. Webb and Lauletta will compete for the backup job, with Webb the early favorite.
Running back (6): Saquon Barkley, Wayne Gallman, Jonathan Stewart, Paul Perkins, Jalen Simmons, Terrell Watson
They didn’t draft Barkley No. 2 overall to sit the bench. He’ll play in all packages. Gallman and Stewart will be sprinkled in.
Fullback (1): Shane Smith
He could have a big role in a more run-centric offense.
Wide receiver (11): Odell Beckham Jr., Sterling Shepard, Roger Lewis, Cody Latimer, Travis Rudolph, Hunter Sharp, Canaan Severin, Kalif Raymond, Keeon Johnson, Marquis Bundy, Amba Etta-Tawo
Beckham is back, and immediately it makes their receiver corps look strong. They're going to need someone to step into the No. 2 role after cutting Brandon Marshall.
Tight end (5): Evan Engram, Rhett Ellison, Jerell Adams, Kyle Carter, Ryan O’Malley
Engram is the receiving option. Ellison is the blocker.
Tackle (6): Nate Solder, Ereck Flowers, Chad Wheeler, Adam Bisnowaty, Nick Becton, Laurence Gibson
Solder gives them one competent, proven starter on the edges. Right tackle is up for grabs.
Guard (6): Patrick Omameh, Will Hernandez, Jon Halapio, John Jerry, Jon Greco, Kristjan Sokoli
Omameh was signed as a free agent. Hernandez was a second-round pick. They are upgrades for the run game.
Center (2): Brett Jones, Ethan Cooper
The Giants allowed Weston Richburg to walk and signed Jones as an unrestricted free agent this offseason. He started 13 games last season.
DEFENSE
Note: Starters in bold
Cornerback (10): Janoris Jenkins, Eli Apple, Donte Deayon, William Gay, Curtis Riley, B.W. Webb, Brandon Dixon, Tim Scott, Teddy Williams, Jeremiah McKinnon
Apple is back in the lineup after a tumultuous 2017 season. The Giants' depth behind him is a serious concern.
Safety (5): Landon Collins, Darian Thompson, Andrew Adams, Michael Thomas, Ryan Murphy
Collins is the clear-cut starter. Free safety is up for grabs among Thompson, Adams and Thomas. It’s also possible Thomas could be the nickel cornerback.
Outside linebacker (5): Olivier Vernon, Kareem Martin, Lorenzo Carter, Avery Moss, Romeo Okwara
This is an interesting change for Vernon, who has spent most of his career as a 4-3 defensive end. Martin knows James Bettcher’s defense, and Carter is an intriguing pass-rush option in sub packages.
Inside linebacker (6): Alec Ogletree, B.J. Goodson, Mark Herzlich, Ray-Ray Armstrong, Calvin Munson, Derrick Matthews
Ogletree and Goodson seem to complement each other well. The Giants are expecting a lot from Ogletree at $10 million per season.
Defensive line (10): Damon Harrison, Dalvin Tomlinson, Josh Mauro, Kerry Wynn, Jordan Williams, Robert Thomas, B.J. Hill, RJ McIntosh, Josh Banks
Mauro is suspended for the first four games. Wynn spent minicamp with the first-team defense. Somebody will have to beat him out to start Week 1.
SPECIAL TEAMS
Note: Starters in bold
Punter (2): Riley Dixon, Austin Rehkow
The Giants traded a conditional seventh-round pick for Dixon. He still has to win a job.
Kicker (2): Aldrick Rosas, Marshall Koehn
Rosas struggled badly last season. Both Rosas and Koehn are unproven. There might be another kicker added at some point.
Long snapper (1): Zak DeOssie
The veteran captain is back for another season.
Kick returner (2): Kalif Raymond, Saquon Barkley
The Giants really have to settle their return game after cutting Dwayne Harris this offseason. Barkley should see some return action but not full time.
Punt returner (2): Kalif Raymond, Odell Beckham Jr.
Raymond was shaky last year. Beckham would return punts only in certain situations.
