We continue our recruit and return series with the Connecticut Huskies, whose season ended Saturday with a loss to Kansas in the second round. A look at what the 2016-17 season could hold:
Possible 2016-17 starting five (statistics reflect regular season average)
G: Alterique Gilbert (incoming freshman)
G: Jalen Adams (7.3 PPG, 2.4 APG)
G: Rodney Purvis (12.5 PPG, 2.9 RPG)
G/F: Daniel Hamilton (12.4 PPG, 8.9 RPG)
C: Amida Brimah (6.7 PPG, 4.6 RPG)
Who is lost: The Huskies will miss the experience of graduate student transfers in guard Sterling Gibbs (Seton Hall) and forward Shonn Miller (Cornell), along with guard Omar Calhoun and forward Phillip Nolan. This nucleus of experienced players brought Kevin Ollie a variety of production in the scoring and rebounding sections of the stat sheet.
Who is added: The No. 8 recruiting class in the nation is on the way to Storrs, led by five-star guard Alterique Gilbert, a big-time playmaker and scorer who is No. 28 in the ESPN 100. Coming in at Nos. 38 and No. 92 in the ESPN 100 are incoming Huskies in forwards Juwan Durham and Mamadou Diarra. They will provide, skill, rebounding and some shot-blocking, and both play with great motors, energy and urgency. Sharpshooter forward Vance Jackson is a matchup problem, and No. 76 in the ESPN 100. VCU transfer Terry Larrier, who averaged 6.6 points in a reserve role for an A-10 team in 2014-15, adds depth.
What it means for next season: Daniel Hamilton and Rodney Purvis will have to handle the lion's share of the scoring, and Ollie will need rock-solid play in the backcourt from primary ball-handlers Jalen Adams and Alterique Gilbert. Amida Brimah will have to protect the rim, rebound, score in and around the lane and be a dependable finisher.
Trending: Up. Kevin Ollie has scoring, playmakers, rebounding and shot-blockers in his returning players, and an excellent recruiting class coming in. If they add team chemistry and consistency, expect the Huskies to hear their name called again on Selection Sunday -- at a minimum.
