Early list of candidates for Lakers coach

Mike D'Antoni's resignation from the Los Angeles Lakers on Wednesday night opens up one of the biggest coaching jobs in the NBA, and there certainly will be a long list of coaches interested in the opening. Here are some of the early names being tossed around:

As Mike Bresnahan of the Los Angeles Times reports, the "Lakers probably won't have new coach before May 20 lottery" and "will likely hire high-salaried big-name NBA guy or NBA assistant with upside."

So who could be on the list?

Byron Scott, for one. Scott has a history with the franchise dating back to the "Showtime Lakers" of the 1980s and a lengthy coaching résumé that includes stops in New Jersey, New Orleans and Cleveland. Sam Amico of Fox Sports Ohio tweets that the Lakers are "well aware of Byron Scott's strong interest in being next coach," per a source, "and without question on radar as potential candidate."

Meanwhile, Adrian Wojnarowski of Yahoo! Sports brings up two other names that would be outside-the-box hires.

"A candidate Lakers management and Kobe Bryant share a fondness for: Euro legend Ettore Messina," Wojnarowski tweeted. "He impressed as assistant under Mike Brown."

And if the Lakers go the route of a rising college coach like the Celtics did last summer with the hiring of Butler's Brad Stevens, who better than the coach of the 2013-14 national champions? Wojnarowski writes: "Possible there won't be a superstar coach available to Lakers, but there's a hometown kid on fast-track to become one: UConn's Kevin Ollie."

While proven coaches with a recent history of success, such as George Karl and Lionel Hollins, could get consideration, one who isn't expected to pursue the job is Stan Van Gundy, per Marc J. Spears of Yahoo! Sports.

ESPN's Marc Stein reports Thursday that the Lakers will take their time with the hire, and lists Jeff Van Gundy and Kurt Rambis as well as Derek Fisher as others who could emerge as possibilities. Fisher, the long-time former Laker, may be the most interesting candidate of all, especially when you consider the success that Mark Jackson has had in Golden State and Jason Kidd in Brooklyn despite coming in without any previous coaching experience.

Oh, and about those John Calipari rumors that surfaced before the national championship game ... don't be surprised if that gains steam again in the weeks ahead. In fact, according to the latest report by Stein and Ramona Shelburne, sources indicate that Lakers officials intend to reach out to both Calipari and Ollie to at least gauge their interest in the job.

We'll let you know of other candidates once more information is available, but these are some early names being mentioned.
