We continue our recruit and return series with the California Golden Bears, whose season ended Friday with a loss to Hawaii in the first round. A look at what the 2016-17 season could hold:
Possible 2016-17 starting five (statistics reflect regular-season average)
G: Sam Singer (3.7 PPG, 2.8 APG)
G: Jordan Mathews (13.1 PPG, 3.4 RPG)
G: Jabari Bird (10.0 PPG, 3.4 RPG)
F: Kameron Rooks (3.6 PPG, 5.0 RPG)
F: Kingsley Okoroh (1.8 PPG, 1.8 RPG)
Who is lost: Cuonzo Martin had one of the most talented starting fives in the country this past season -- but it’s likely that at least three of those players will be gone before the 2016-17 season. Tyrone Wallace is out of eligibility. He developed into one of the best point guards in the country as a junior, and although an injury slowed him for some of his senior season (and he missed the NCAA tournament with a broken hand), he was still an outstanding backcourt performer. Then there’s two likely early entries into the NBA Draft. Jaylen Brown and Ivan Rabb could be drafted in June’s lottery, and most are expecting them to be one-and-done players. Brown was the team’s leading scorer and was simply unguardable at times off the bounce, while Rabb showed flashes of the inside-outside ability that makes him such a sought-after prospect.
Who is added: The Golden Bears had an elite recruiting class last season, but they’ve followed it up with a fairly small incoming group. Cal’s staff is high on shooting guard Tyson Jolly, who was originally a member of the 2015 class but decided to do a post-grad year in Florida. The Oklahoma native is a high-motor player who makes plays at both ends. He can make shots to the perimeter, but is at his best when slashing to the basket. Cal also picked up a recent commitment from junior college point guard Don Coleman, who will help provide depth behind Sam Singer. Small forward Roman Davis was redshirted this past season and will suit up in 2016-17.
What it means for next season: Despite the losses of Wallace and likely Brown, the Golden Bears’ perimeter group is still a pretty impressive group. In addition to Jolly, Martin can look to Singer at the point guard spot and double-figure scorers Jordan Mathews and Jabari Bird on the wings. Singer is just a solid ball-handler who is a pass-first player but will take a 3-pointer if left open. Mathews and Bird are scorers. Mathews is one of the best 3-point shooters in the Pac-12 and isn’t afraid to take big shots or extend his range, while Bird can score in different ways. He is a consistent 3-point shooter, but is also good in the middle range or off the dribble. Former Georgetown transfer Stephen Domingo has deep range. There are questions up front for Cal without Rabb. Kameron Rooks and Kingsley Okoroh split time at the center spot this past season -- and both will see bigger minutes next season.
Trending: Down. Martin’s recruiting class that included Brown and Rabb helped get the Golden Bears to the NCAA tournament -- but there’s going to be a step back next season without those two and Wallace. Mathews and Bird will have to become legitimate go-to guys, but the talent drop-off from 2015-16 to 2016-17 will be noticeable. Cal will hope to pick up a few transfers late in the process.
